Today is World Kidney Day! This day is meant to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of kidneys worldwide, and at Savannah Healthcare Services, we offered free nutrition counselling for everyone. I have spent a lot of time talking to kidney patients (with respect to kidney diseases) and that is why I will share 9 great tips for kidney disease prevention!

If you have one or more of the risk factors for kidney disease, it’s particularly important to look after your kidney health and get your kidney function checked regularly. Risk factors include if kidney disease is in your family, if you have diabetes, a heart condition or high blood pressure, or if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

For example, if you have diabetes, it’s very important to keep your blood sugar level under control. You should also have your doctor regularly check your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and your blood glucose level, and make sure any urinary tract infections are treated straight away.

The theme of World Kidney Day 2019 is “Kidney health for everyone, everywhere.” As many as 850 million people across the world suffer from kidney diseases. Chronic kidney diseases are in fact the 6th fastest growing cause of death, with 2.4 million deaths per year.
It is important to raise awareness about the increasing incidence of kidney diseases and ways to prevent kidney disease. Below are some tips:
1. Keep fit and active.
2. Keep regular control of your blood sugar level.
3. Monitor your blood pressure.
4. Eat healthy and keep your weight in check.
5. Maintain a healthy fluid intake. At least 6-8 glasses of water a day.
7. Do not take over-the-counter medication on a regular basis.
8. Minimize alcohol intake.
9. Go for kidney screenings every year. Timely diagnosis and treatment is the key to preventing and treating kidney diseases.
Happy World Kidney Day!
